The Big Five Mt. Kilimanjaro - The Roof of Africa

Duration: 6 Days

Day 1: Drive to a small town of Loitokitok, the starting point of the Rongai Route. Begin hiking at about 6,000 ft, up through the unspoilt trail through tropical rain forest and into stands of giant heather, to camp at the First Cave at 9,600 ft.

Day 2: Start off for destination Second Cave at 11,000 ft. below a large lava. A steep trail leading through forests onto moorlands heading towards the Mawenzi peak, the second highest peak at 17,000 ft. until you reach the night's stop over point, Kikelewa Camp at 12,400ft. The camp is close to the saddle where Mawenzi connects to Kibo and Uhuru peak.
Day 3: Trekking east toward the Mawenzi, the destination is Mawenzi Camp at 14,000 ft. You will experience another change in scenery, leaving the moorlands for the alpine zone. Spend the afternoon relaxing and acclimatizing or explore the surrounding areas.
Day 4: Begin a four hour trek to Outward Bound Hut at 15,500 ft. passing between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. From here the scenery is breathtaking of glacier covered Kibo peak and rugged looking Mawenzi peak. Arrive by afternoon and spend the time relaxing for the climb ahead of you.
Day 5: Today is the most difficult and challenging part of the trek. Leave camp about 1:00 am and start your long, hard walk steadily up the hill. Reach the crater rim by sunrise and enjoy the panoramic view from Gillman's Point at 18,700 ft. Walking now in the thin air at high altitude, we follow the crater rim around to reach Uhuru Peak at 19,340 ft, the Roof of Africa. After a short stop, sign the visitor's book, take photos besides a wooden sign which says: YOU HAVE REACHED THE HIGHEST POINT IN AFRICA and exchange mutual congratulations. You will have earned it at this point. We descend the mountain and head for Kibo Hut at 15,500 ft. Rest, have a light lunch and continue on to Horombo Hut at 12,000 ft.

Day 6: We hike back through the cloud forest to the Marangu Gate and to your Hotel for the finest shower of your life.
